Using Stipends for Interim Appointments

Interim Appointments occur when an administrative position becomes vacant and another employee is asked to step in and cover the administrative duties of the vacated position. The employee who receives the interim appointment may be given a stipend to compensate for the additional responsibilities.

The stipend should be added to the budget of the employee's regular position. A new employment document should be initiated including an additional pay line for the stipend. The stipend is NOT included as part of the base salary, but is included in the document total, and a notation is added to the "Remarks" section of the employment document giving the reason for the stipend.

The account line on the employment document is written using the "STP" earnings code. The FTE for the account lines should be left blank.

The Jobclass code and Rank/Range listed on the interim appointment document should reflect the employee's regular position. They should not be adjusted to reflect the position for which the employee is in interim capacity.

The employee's title can be adjusted to reflect the interim capacity. An example is listed below.

Example:

An employee is in an Administrative Faculty position earning $60,000 per year and has been asked to become the Interim Director of a department for three months during a search for the new director. The interim appointment is effective January 1, 2002 and is based on 5% of the base salary.
