October 9, 2001
Present:
Karen Emptage, Matt Garland, Kamava Karwan, Mary Fisher, Irene Tucker, Stephanie Flatt, Marlies Steele, and Jill Ukeilly. This was the second chapter meeting of fiscal year 2001-2002. The meeting was called to order by Karen Emptage, President.
PROGRAM SUBCOMMITTEE REPORT
Members of our programming subcommittee gave an update. The theme being built on for the conference is workplace violence and will be held on March 29, 2002, in Las Vegas.
GUEST SPEAKERS: The committee has been gathering information on guest speakers.
Stephanie has been in contact with SST Communications to collect performance information on the topic of workplace violence. You may have seen them perform at the Southwest Region conference held last May in Reno. This dynamic group would perform for our one-day conference. The skit would be tailored to focus on a wide audience rather than an audience from a higher education environment. Stephanie has reserved March 29th with SST and they will be sending her an 18-minute sample video of one of their performances for viewing. The committee decided that SST would perform after the lunch break. Stephanie negotiated a price of $500 for the performance, $350 per diem, plus air/hotel costs. This price may be adjusted downward if other entities "piggyback" off of our reservation. Good job Stephanie!
Karen reported that Lindley Steere, EAP coordinator for the State of Nevada, might be interested in giving a presentation on domestic violence. This presentation may be in conjunction with Veronica Frankel of the AG’s office. The committee was interested in pursuing this presentation, as it may be free of charge, but also informative.
Karen attended a Safe Nest Domestic Violence In The Workplace session on October 19th and will let us know if they would also be a good option for a speaker.
Marlies is following up with Robin Freestone on a conference she attended presented by a group of attorneys. Robin requested information on speakers and topics, which they will send to her. Marlies will present the information when it is received.
The committee decided that the focus of the conference would be very positive, despite the seriousness of the workplace violence theme.
CONFERENCE LOCATION/FOOD: The committee is considering a couple of different locations as options for the conference. The committee is researching facilities on the UNLV campus as well as an off-campus site. Karen will write a letter to the UNLV Alumni group requesting that the fee be waived for use of their facilities.
Jill suggested the Cooperative Extension conference room at Lindell & Sahara streets as a possible conference site. This room can accommodate up to 250 people. Karen will check out this facility with Jill. This would allow our chapter to hire a caterer, go to COSTCO for beverages, and keep our costs down. Jill has a list of caterers that she has used in the past. Karen will gather information on catering.
Matt reported on information he has gathered regarding food for the conference if we used the UNLV Alumni facilities. He will look at the contract to see if we are required to use on campus catering services or if we have options regarding food and drink. Price quotes for food are as follows:
Continental breakfast w/ buffet lunch est. $1850/100 people
Breakfast $4.95 per person
Deli lunch $10.00 per person
All day beverages $12.50 per gallon
CONFERENCE ATTENDEES: Karen contacted the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce, and they can provide us with a list of area employers as potential invitees for our conference.
