CUPA SouthWestern Region Information
Larry Hamilton will be serving the remainder of Diana DeSimone's term on the Board of Directors of the CUPA SouthWestern Region. This term ends on June 30, 1998. In the first half of calendar year 1998, the membership shall be polled to inquire about interest in the position. As per our bylaws, the Executive Committee shall then select the representative by majority vote. The term of office will be for three years and will begin on July 01, 1998. Per the Southwest Regional By-laws, this individual is required to hold National membership. The selected representative is responsible for acquiring and securing funds necessary for travel and activities related to the position within the Southwest Regional Organization. The representative may solicit financial assistance from the Nevada Chapter, but there is no guarantee such funding will be available or approved. The tradition of CUPA SouthWestern Region is that the association will pay expenses for the Fall Mtg each year, but the expenses related to the Spring/Conference Mtg rest with the individual.
This year the regional conference will be held in Tucson Arizona on April 26 - 29, 1998. The theme for the conference is "Frontiers in Leadership". Visit the CUPA SouthWestern Region Web Site at http://www.unlv.edu/Human_Resources/SW_CUPA/ for more information.
Old Business - Seminar
High interest still exists for the idea of presenting a seminar related to "Mediation and Alternate Dispute Resolution". The seminar would be held in Reno during the first half of 1998. More information will be forthcoming at our next NV CUPA meeting.
New Business - State Incorporation of NV CUPA
In order to retain an affiliation with CUPA National, the NV CUPA Chapter must incorporate. Given the many benefits related to this affiliation, the NV CUPA Chapter agreed to take all necessary steps to preserve our relationship and affiliation with National CUPA. A preliminary look at the Nevada process for incorporation revealed that the forms and requirements are minimal. Matt Garland from UNLV volunteered to assist with the steps necessary to incorporate. To affiliate with CUPA, a chapter must formalize chapter operations, write by-laws, incorporate, and seek approval from National. Nonaffiliated chapters must file a notice of intent to affiliate with CUPA by January 1, 1998. The deadline for existing chapters to affiliate before support and services are discontinued is June 30, 1998.
New Business - Roadrunner Award
The purpose of this award is to identify and recognize a Human Resource professional who is a positive role model having made significant contribution(s) to the profession, his/her campus, and/or National or Nevada CUPA. A significant contribution may include something innovative, service connected, creative, etc. The Roadrunner Award Committee shall select the recipient by majority vote of the committee. The chairperson shall be responsible for communicating the selection to the appropriate Southwest Regional representative. The announcement of the award shall be made at the annual Southwest Regional CUPA Conference.
